Winnipeg Vacation Guide

Winnipeg Map

Introduction

Almost exactly half way between each coast and the provincial capital of Manitoba, Winnipeg looks and feels very much like a western city due to its architecture. Home to half of the province's population and as the fourth largest city in Canada, Winnipeg is an important grain handling and transportation center.

Most of the bars, restaurants, cafes and places to hang out after the sun goes down can be found along Cordyon Avenue and Osborne Village.

Getting There & Around

20 minutes northwest of downtown Winnipeg is the international airport. Air Canada is the carrier with the highest number of routes out of Winnipeg but many US airlines operate to and from this airport too. You can get from the airport to downtown by taxi for , or by city bus on Winnipeg Transit. VIA Rail's Union Station is located in the heart of the city, just beside The Forks.

In addition to regular buses, which serve the entire metro area, Downtown Spirit buses offer free transportation along four downtown routes that link popular tourist areas. A brochure detailing the service is readily available, and your hotel concierge can also help you navigate the system. There is, in summer and early fall, the Splash Dash Water Bus Service that plies the waters of the Red and the Assiniboine rivers. You can find taxis at the downtown hotels and/or rent cars to get around more freely.
