Quebec City Vacation Guide

Quebec City Map

Introduction

The ‘cradle of New France’ and the bastion of French culture in North America today, Quebec City is the most charming city on the continent. Nowhere else is the past so well preserved in an ensemble of 17th- to 19th-century buildings, wrapped tight in the fortifications of the only walled city north of Mexico. A popular destination for visitors, with its horse-drawn calèches rattling down cobblestone streets between grey-stone buildings, Old Quebec also won recognition from UNESCO and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985.

Quebec City is located in the eastern portion of massive Canada and is divided between an Old Town bristling with historic ramparts, churches, narrow lanes and former battlefields, and districts revamped with museums, cafes, bars, restaurants and all the other mod-cons of international tourism.

Getting There & Around

Jean Lesage International Airport is the aerial gateway into Quebec City and is located about 10km (6mi) west of town. It fields international flights from several US destinations, including Boston and Newark, as well as from Mexico and Paris. The main domestic carrier touching down here is Air Canada, which forges connections with other chief Canadian cities such as Ottawa, in the neighbouring province of Ontario.

Montreal is the place where buses trundle into Québec province from the USA - there are no international coaches running direct between Quebec City. Ferries navigate the breadth of the St Lawrence River between Quebec City on the north shore (docking at Place Royale) and Lévis. The only transport mode between town and the airport is taxi. Quebec City is covered by a reasonably priced and efficient bus system, the hub of which is Gare Centrale d'Autobus on Boulevard Charest Est in St Roch.

Attractions

Old Port (Vieux Port) : The city's old harbourside area has been doted on by developers and now fields a crop of government buildings, newish apartment complexes, retail boutiques and recreational/entertainment facilities, the most prominent of which is the outdoor concert arena called Agora.

St Jean Baptiste & St Roch : The area is bordered on its southern side by a boulevard called Grande Allée, home of discos, cellar-dwelling taverns and alfresco restaurants.

Upper Town (Haute Ville) : The Upper Town is home to the old fortified part of Quebec City, the enchanting and exceedingly tourist-friendly Old Town. The main structure in this wall-encircled chunk of historical dirt is La Citadelle, a hefty asymmetrical fort. Nowadays, it's home to the Royal 22s and several military museums.
