Getting There & Around


Calgary International Airport lies 16km (10 miles) northeast of the city. The airport is served by major airlines to and from North American and European destinations. There are taxis and airporter bus to downtown hotels.

The nearest VIA Rail station is in Edmonton. Greyhound buses link Calgary with most other points in Canada, including Banff and Edmonton, as well as towns in the United States. The all-weather, four lane Trans-Canada Highway from Calgary to Canmore and Banff townsites will get you there in under 90 minutes. After that you can continue on to see the beauty of Lake Louise, Jasper and British Columbia. You can rent a car and design your own adventure. Or for something unique, take a vintage rail car through the Canadian Rockies or climb aboard a prairie steamer.

Art Gallery of Calgary : This contemporary art gallery, housed in two recently renovated downtown buildings, places a special emphasis on the contribution of local and regional talent and is a good place to see Calgary's contribution to the modern-art scene. National and regional shows also travel to the Art Gallery.

Canada Olympic Park : Since its construction in 1986, Canada Olympic Park has hosted tens of thousands of visitors from all over the globe. Located just ten minutes from the downtown core, be sure to visit this truly unique facility at the gateway to the magnificent Rocky Mountains. In winter, both adults and children can take downhill and cross-country ski lessons, learn to ski jump or snowboard or get an introduction to snow skating.

Banff Ski Hills : Here, skiers and boarders will find groomed conditions as well as lessons for those looking to brush up. For those searching for Banff snowboarding, you will find a great Snowboard Park. Everything from beginner slopes to double black diamond runs is here, all against the backdrop of Banff National Park. Calgary Science Centre : The Calgary Science Centre features a fascinating kid-oriented combination of exhibitions, a planetarium, films, laser shows, and live theater, all under one roof. The hands-on, science-oriented exhibits change, but always invite visitors to push, pull, talk, listen, and play. The 360-degree Star Theatre opens windows to the universe.

Calgary Zoo, Botanical Garden & Prehistoric Park : Calgary's large and thoughtfully designed zoo resides on St. George's Island in the Bow River. The Calgary Zoo comes as close to providing natural habitats for its denizens as is technically possible. You'll particularly want to see the troop of majestic lowland gorillas and the African warthogs.
