Acapulco Vacation Guide

Acapulco Map

Introduction

It is the romantic history of spice ships & pirates, golden beaches, tropical jungles & lagoons, nightlife and famous cliff-divers that have made Acapulco the first and foremost resort town in Mexico.

Visitors to this amazing resort town find a wide variety of beach and water activities. Snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, and fishing are all popular choices. The attractions on land are equally impressive, as each of the numerous resorts boasts world-class tennis and golf facilities. The nightlife is legendary, and the constant opening of new and ever more spectacular dance clubs shows that Acapulco remains the disco capital of the world. These clubs are always crowded, so visitors usually go to several in one night. The restaurants are also well-known for their variety, and the menu choices range from simple lunch offerings to world-class cuisine. Most visitors come here to wine, dine and dance the night away to a salsa beat; take part in the wealth of activity in and around the water.

Acapulco Vacation Guide

Getting There & Around

Acapulco's Alvarez International Airport is a busy hub, particularly for flights to and from the United States but also from Europe and Canada. Many flights connect through Mexico City or Guadalajara, both short hops from Acapulco. The airport is 23km (14mi) southeast of the city center and there are shuttles that will take you into town. Acapulco is one of Mexico's busiest ports, and visitors also arrive by cruise ship.

Acapulco has a good local bus system, with buses every few minutes to most places you'd want to go. Taxis are plentiful in Acapulco and cab drivers are happy to take gringos for a ride, especially for fares higher than the official rates. Always agree on the fare before you climb into the cab. Renting cars is another option to get around.

Acapulco's convention center, Centro de Convenciones, is a huge complex with a permanent crafts gallery (Galería de Artesanías), temporary special exhibitions, a large plaza, theatres and concert halls.

The Centro Internacional de Convivencia Infantil (known as CICI) is a much-loved family water-sports park not far from the Centro de Convenciones. Dolphin, seal and diving shows are presented several times daily; there's also an 80m (260ft) water toboggan, a pool with artificial waves, a small tide pool aquarium and a Sky ride.

The famous cliff divers of La Quebrada have been dazzling audiences since 1934, swan diving with graceful finesse from heights of 25-35m (82-115ft) into the narrow ocean cove below. At least three divers perform each time, and you're allowed to stay for more than one show.

Mágico Mundo Marino - highlights at this aquarium include a sea lion show, the feeding of crocodiles, piranhas and turtles, swimming pools, water toboggans and an oceanographic museum. There's also a restaurant, and you can take scuba lessons or hire snorkelling equipment.
