About Frankfurt

Located by the River Main and with so many skyscrapers it has been dubbed 'Mainhatten', Frankfurt is the financial capital of Germany, home of the Börse (German Stock Exchange), and a major centre for trade. Culturally rich, Frankfurt was the birthplace of Goethe. The Goethehaus and Goethe Museum provide wonderful insights into the life of Germany's greatest poet. It is also a major transportation hub, the site of both Europe’s second-largest airport and one of its busiest train stations. Tourists come to visit and to enjoy Frankfurt's fine opera, ballet, and world-class museums. Visitors are often amazed by Frankfurt’s multicultural variety and by the beauty of its suburbs and surrounding countryside.

The historic center of the city is Romerberg, a square just two blocks north of the Main. The old town's walls were torn down and the moats filled in, but a green belt of parks loops around the old city in their place. Several guardhouses still stand as landmarks. Northeast of Romerberg is the Konstablerwache, which has U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations. Northwest of Romerberg is the Hauptwache, now the site of a cafe and also an important transportation hub. To the east of the Hauptwache is the Zeil, Frankfurt's busiest shopping street, and to the west is Grosse Bockenheimer Strasse, known locally as the Fressgasse (or "chow-down alley") for its food markets and eating establishments.

Frankfurt Vacation Guide

Getting There & Around

Frankfurt is the mother of all transport hubs. Flughafen Frankfurt-am-Main (Frankfurt Airport) is Germany's main gateway and continental Europe's busiest airport. It's a mini-city of two massive terminals linked by the Sky Line elevated railway, and just about every major airline flies here from around the world. You can get to central Frankfurt via bus to Sudbahnhof from Terminal 1, level 1, but the fastest and cheapest route is via the S8 commuter train and selected suburban trains from Terminal 1 to Hauptbahnhof. Taxis are also an easy, albeit expensive, option. Frankfurt Airport Information

Frankfurt's Hauptbahnhof is Germany's busiest main train station, and 90 long-distance trains also stop daily at the airport's train station. Long-distance buses connect Frankfurt with most eastern and western European countries, as well as North Africa. With most of Germany's Autobahnen converging on the city, cars can often seem to outnumber people in Frankfurt. The city hosts the country's biggest Los Angeles-style spaghetti junction, Frankfurter Kreuz, and parking is a nightmare . Frankfurt Train Station

Frankfurt's public transport system is excellent and integrates the city's bus, tram, S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines. It's expensive but effective, and you can buy hourly or daily tickets at almost any stop (as long as you can decipher the ticketing machines' enigmatic instructions). The underground S-Bahn and U-Bahn train lines are convenient and run more frequently than buses. Trams run on major routes and offer above-ground views. Cycling isn't a bad way of getting around, and most streets have designated bike lanes.
